Ultimate Guide on Your Night Skin Care Routine

Ultimate Guide on Your Night Skin Care Routine

Ultimate Guide on Your Night Skin Care Routine

by

Let’s be honest; you’re lucky to wash your face once a day. Doing it at night? Not happening. Hey man, we get it. You’re a busy guy, and the last thing you want to think about is a nighttime skincare routine.

Lucky for you, Disco thought of one for you, and we promise, it takes minimal effort to add to your already crammed schedule. Let’s talk about why you need a night skincare routine and how to use Disco’s lineup of products to get your skin prepped before you hit the sack.

Why You Need a Night Skin Routine

You probably wash your face in the morning when you shower. Whether or not you actually use a facial cleanser is debatable. If you’re one of the few dudes who follow up your cleansing routine with a toner or moisturizer, we give you serious props.

However, if you’re only taking care of your skin during the day, you’re missing out on a wealth of benefits you could be giving your skin at nighttime. Here are four reasons you need to include an after-hours skincare routine in your program.

1. Your Face is Dirty

Pollution, dirt, oil, the remnants of your lunch; all of these are sticking to your face at the end of the day even if you can’t see them. When you hit the sack, that gives all the dirt and gunk time to settle into your pores, creating pimples and acne bumps.

2. Prevent Blemishes

If you have acne-prone skin, you have to take better care of it at night. Acne forms from pores that get clogged with sebum (your skin’s natural oil), dead skin cells, dirt, and grime. If you don’t cleanse and protect your skin before going to bed, you’re basically rolling out the red carpet for breakouts.

3. Skin Healing

Your skin does most of its restoration and healing overnight while you sleep. While you’re off in dreamland, your skin cells are repairing, making new collagen and elastin, and working to prevent long-term damage from the sun and free radicals.

Using ingredients to help benefit your skin overnight can help your skin heal itself properly and help you fight the signs of aging.

4. Anti-Aging

Are you starting to notice fine lines around your eyes (crow’s feet) and on your forehead? Welcome to your thirties. If you don’t become proactive about your skin, you’ll get lines and wrinkles faster than if you use products that contain wrinkle-fighting ingredients.

At night, using a moisturizer that contains ingredients to help battle wrinkles can help stimulate your skin cells to produce more collagen and elastin, two proteins that help keep your skin looking youthful.

Nighttime Routine Must Haves

It’s more than just splashing water on your face and calling it a night. Your evening skin routine should have at least two steps; cleansing and moisturizing. At least two times a week, additional treatments like exfoliating and deep cleaning your pores should be a priority. Here’s how to make it happen.

Cleansers

Cut ties with the soap on a rope and grab a cleanser that actually works for your skin. Disco’s Charcoal Face Cleanser Stick is easy to use and contains ingredients like charcoal to dive deep into your pores and dig out dirt and oil.

Using a high-quality, gentle cleanser ensures your pores are clean and clear. With our cleanser, you’ll also get the benefit of hydrating and moisturizing coconut oil and phytic acid to help accelerate skin cell turnover, giving you newer, more youthful-looking skin.

Moisturizers

Every skin type needs moisture, even if you think your skin is oily. In fact, if you have oily skin, it could be because your skin is producing more oil because you actually have dry skin.

Good moisturizers can create protective seals on your skin that help prevents oil and gunk from your pillowcase from penetrating your pores. Disco’s Hydrating Face Moisturizer contains everything your skin needs to heal and restore overnight:

  • Vitamin E for hydration and skin conditioning
  • Macadamia nut oil for soothing properties
  • Vitamin C for collagen stimulation

It’s like giving your skin a multivitamin before bed.

Exfoliate

A couple of times a week, throw an exfoliating scrub into the rotation. Exfoliating your entire face helps remove the top layer of dead skin cells, helps keep your skin clear, and supports firmer, more supple-looking skin. It’s also a boss at helping you avoid ingrown hairs and razor burn.

Disco’s Exfoliating Face Scrub contains aloe, so even if you have super sensitive skin, you can still exfoliate without worrying about irritation.

Mask Up

A face mask is essential for deep cleaning your skin and keeping it conditioned. You only need to use it once or twice a week. If you have seriously acne-prone skin, twice a week can help keep your pores clean and balance your skin’s natural moisture levels.

Disco’s Rejuvenating Face Mask contains natural bentonite clay to suck out impurities from your pores, charcoal to help balance your natural moisture production, and willow bark extract to help reduce irritation and puffiness.

Bonus Points

One of our all-time favorite skincare products is eye cream, but we had a hard time finding one that worked well for guys. That’s why we developed our Repairing Eye Stick. Made with caffeine, pycnogenol, and niacinamide, it contains all the ingredients you need to wake up to eyes that look like they’ve slept a full, refreshing eight hours (even if you got three hours of sleep).

You can apply the eye stick to your entire eye area both morning and night.

While everyone's nightly skincare routine will be different, some other ingredients that are good to include in your routine can consist of alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs), chemical exfoliants, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and salicylic acid.

Ingredients to Avoid

At Disco, we use natural, plant-based ingredients that are powerful enough to be effective but gentle enough for even seriously sensitive skin types. Even though some chemical ingredients can work, they can often come with side effects that you don’t want. Our list of nighttime skincare routine ingredients to avoid?

  • Benzoyl peroxide. This blemish-fighting ingredient has a bleaching effect that can ruin your sheets and leave your skin irritated.
  • Sunscreen. You don’t need an SPF at bedtime. Some sunblocks contain chemicals that aren’t safe. For daytime sun protection, try zinc oxide. While broad-spectrum SPF may be beneficial for the daytime, it won't help you while you sleep since you'll be indoors.
  • Alcohol. Alcohol is drying on your skin. Even if your skin feels oily, products that contain alcohol can make it worse. Opt instead for products that balance your skin’s natural moisture levels.

Talk to your dermatologist if you are unsure about what products to avoid in your nightly skincare routine.
