You already know your “type,” but do you know your skin type? Probably not. Determining your skin type can help you get better skin, which can help you look better and probably get you more dates with said type.
Your skin type is determined by how your skin behaves naturally. For instance, if it makes a lot of extra oil, you may have an oily skin type. No matter what type of skin you have, taking care of it is essential to sustaining your dashing good looks.
What Determines Skin Type?
Genetics. Well, mostly. Your DNA is the biggest contributing factor to how your skin behaves. Skin types also have a lot to do with pores size. Usually, the larger your pores, the oilier your skin feels. Your pores size is also closely related to your mom and pop.
Environmental factors can also play an essential role in your skin type. If you live in an arid climate, your skin may naturally become drier than it would be if you lived somewhere with more humidity.
Lifestyle choices can also affect your skin. If you smoke, your skin will naturally be drier and develop wrinkles and fine lines faster. Stay in the sun for hours without sunscreen, and you’ll end up with skin that is dry and sensitive.
Five Different Skin Types
Skin types are generally categorized by five different types: normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive.
1. Normal Skin
Normal skin types have comfortable skin that doesn’t feel excessively oily or dry. You may not be able to see your pores unless you look closely in the mirror. Products like sunscreen, face cleanser, or moisturizers don’t irritate your skin, and you don’t suffer from breakouts.
Normal skin is somewhat of a unicorn; not many guys have it. If you do, consider yourself one of the lucky ones, and throw in some products to help keep your skin looking youthful and even-toned.
Product to try: Disco’s Anti-Aging Set. Our set is the perfect accessory for your skin care routine. Our set includes our Repairing Eye Stick, formulated with caffeine to brighten and tighten under-eye skin, pycnogenol to eradicate dark circles, and niacinamide to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.
You’ll also get our Face Mask with bentonite clay to help banish any dullness you may experience and willow bark extract to keep your skin calm and hydrated.
2. Dry Skin
Dry skin lacks moisture. You might feel like your skin is dry, stretchy, or feels too tight across your face. Your complexion may look dull and lifeless, and you may even experience peeling or flaking.
Dry skin can happen at any age, but it can also happen naturally as you get older and the skin takes longer to regenerate. You can combat dry areas by making sure you exfoliate regularly. Exfoliating removes the layer of dead skin on your stratum corneum.
Product to try: Disco’s Face Scrub. Use our face scrub a few times a week to keep your skin exfoliated and encourage new cell turnover. Unlike other scrubs, ours contains aloe, so it won’t leave your skin feeling chapped, irritated, or dry.
Also, you should try: Disco’s Hydrating Face Moisturizer. This ain’t your grandma’s moisturizer.
Packed with vitamin E to help smooth and soften the skin, macadamia nut oil to hydrate, and vitamin C to promote collagen production, our moisturizer absorbs rapidly and keeps your skin hydrated all day.
3. Oily Skin
Oily skin is characterized by pores that are larger than life and excess oil production, especially on the forehead, nose, and chin (aka the “T zone”). It can be hard to control the oil production on your face, and you may feel like you need to wash your face multiple times a day to get rid of it (pro tip: don’t do that).
Oily skin is also prone to breakouts more than other skin types. Sebum (your skin’s natural oil) can bond with dead skin cells and dirt, causing clogged pores that result in acne bumps and oily areas.
Avoid using products that contain harsh chemical ingredients that can dry your skin and cause irritation. Also, don’t skip out on moisturizer. Every skin type needs hydration.
Product to try: Disco’s Purifying Face Mask. Send pimples packing with our face mask. Use it a few times a week to clean out your pores and help bring your skin’s natural moisture back into balance. Bentonite clay helps pull out impurities, while charcoal deep dives into pores to help control oil production.
4. Combination
Most skin types will fall into this category. Combination skin is skin that has areas of dryness and areas of oiliness. You may have dry, itchy skin on your cheeks and oily skin on your forehead.
Combination skin is usually related to genetics, but you can use products to help balance out hydration and bring your skin back into the normal zone.
Product to try: Disco’s Starter Set. Sometimes combination skin is a result of not taking care of your skin. The best way to start is by using a few simple products to cleanse, hydrate, and nourish your skin daily.
The Starter Set includes our Charcoal Face Cleanser Stick, Face Scrub, and Hydrating Face Moisturizer. Literally everything you need to help combat uneven skin type and bring your skin back into balance.
5. Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is a skin type, but it can also be paired up with oily, dry, and combination skin types. Sensitive skin is often red, itchy, irritated, and may even burn or sting. If you try to use new products, you almost always develop irritation, and your skin often feels uncomfortable.
Peeling, flaking, and breakouts can also be characteristic of sensitive skin, which can make you wonder if your skin might be oily, too.
Don’t worry, your skin doesn't need therapy. It just needs gentle, plant-based products that help it remain calm.
Product to try: Disco’s Face Cleanser Stick is soothing and gentle on the skin. Formulated with hydrating coconut oil, our gentle cleanser removes dirt and oil while also treating skin irritation. Our cleanser works great for guys who get razor burn, too.
How To Determine Your Skin Type
Not sure which skin type you have? There’s an easy way to figure it out.
Wash your face with a mild cleanser (like our Face Cleanser Stick). Don’t apply any moisturizer or any products to your skin once you’ve cleansed.
Using a clean tissue, blot your face on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin. Then, examine the tissue.
- Normal skin won’t have any residue left on the tissue, and the skin will be comfortable and smooth.
- Dry skin may produce flakes on the tissue and feel uncomfortable and tight.
- Oily and combination skin will show dampness on the tissue, especially when dabbed on the t-zone areas.
-
Sensitive skin may feel uncomfortable and even produce flakes of skin on the tissue.
